Before & After: Bistro Chair Gets a Toilet Seat Cover Makeover
We’ve had this old bistro chair for a long time, and when it was time to find it a new home, I asked my niece Valaree if she’d like it for her new apartment. She thought it could be perfect to use with her desk in her bedroom. To surprise her, I decided to conspire with her mom and find out the new color scheme of the apartment’s bedroom–both of which she hadn’t even moved into yet. It was going to be turquoise, white and gray. I decided gray would be the way to go as it would give a bit of color but also be more neutral than, say, turquoise. So I started looking everywhere for upholstery fabric that would be fun yet durable. Faux fur was an option, but I wanted it to be able to stand up to her cat Chester’s kitty claws, just in case he decided to adopt the chair as his own. Then, on an inspiration-seeking mission to Target while perusing the bath linens, I passed the rugs and zeroed in on the toilet seat covers. They were the right shape! They were the right size! They were durable! There were gray ones! Hey, it was worth a shot. I plunked down the 9 bucks, took one home.
The seat of the chair was “16 in diameter and the cushion part was about 1” thick. As it turned out, that was about the size of a toilet seat.
Reupholstering the seat couldn’t have been easier. I just pulled the toilet seat cover over the chair seat, adjusted the sides until I had enough salvage to securely staple and then I stapled away. And here’s how the chair turned out:
On a whim, I put it in our guest room, and it went perfectly with the white/gray/yellow scheme we have going on in there, but, alas, the chair was promised to Valaree. No worries–there are other chairs and plenty of toilet seat covers at Target.
